Joomla 1.5 to 1.6 Migration

Joomla 1.6 is not ready for live production sites as of April 2010, but it's getting close.

Many Joomla users are wondering how to migrate from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6.

 

At this time the best free Joomla 1.5 to 1.6 migration solution seems to be jUpgrade by Matias Aguirre.

This component will download Joomla 1.6, decompress it and install it.

Then jUpgrade migrates all the data from old Joomla 1.5 to the new Joomla 1.6 installation.

This may not work perfectly at this time, but a stable version of jUpgrade is planned to be released

 

Update Feb 15 2011:

• As of this time jUpgrade is not 100% working, but getting close.

Update Mar 09 2011:

• jUpgrade is at 100%

I tried SP Upgrade and it successfully migrated this site (JoomlaWebHosting.ca) from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6. which was previously migrated from J1.0 to J1.5.

Third party extensions are not migrated. This is to be expected.

Some menu items aliases were renamed and need to be fixed.

SP Upgrade provides a report after migration containing helpful post-migration information.

jUpgrade now migrates Joomla 1.5 to 1.7 and also supports the migration of several third party extensions.
