If you want users to be able to contribute content as soon as they register (without manually assigning them to Author group) follow the steps below to make new users Author by default.

To disable Joomla 1.7 User Registration go to:

Users -> User Manager

Click the Options button in top toolbar.

This opens the User Configuration settings.

In the Component tab set "Allow User Registration" to No.

Click "Save" button at top.

This will remove the "Create an account" link from the Login page and Login Module.

This also blocks direct access to index.php?option=com_users&view=registration

If CPanel Redirects are not working ...

joomla_17The string "Created on" in Article Date can be edited in the com_component language file at:

[joomla_root]/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_content.ini

Search file for COM_CONTENT_CREATED_DATE_ON="Created on %s"

Change to COM_CONTENT_CREATED_DATE_ON="%s"
